Kitchen countertop backsplash makeover

The original countertop backsplash was a mirror, 6 ft wide by about 14 inches tall. The mirror was held in place by screws and a little double sticky tape. After removing the mirror, I cleaned the wall with lacquer thinner to remove any old grease and dirt.

The home improvement stores gave us some good ideas as to what we wanted, but I didn’t want to install actual tiles. All the stores had a version of self adhesive tiles and plastic, but were somewhat pricey.

I came across these self adhesive tiles at Amazon, they looked perfect for what we wanted to do. Although I ordered t6wo boxes, I only needed one.

Installation was easy. I started on the left side near the door.  After a test fit, I cut the left side of the first tile so the straight edge would fit nicely against the door frame. Remove the backing and carefully press it into place.  The panel has a front protective covering thats also removed.  The next tile is lined up and pressed into place. Total time about 30 minutes and the counter looks fabulous.

  1. Are these glass tiles? How are they different than what they sell at the home stores? We have that same mirror and talked about replacing it. Thanks!

    • No, not glass. They are a self adhesive vinyl. They look good and come in different styles. Follow the link to Amazon in the article.
